Cool Summer

Iceland defender Ingibjorg Sigurdardottir, now full-time at Brondby, previews a Group A containing hosts Switzerland, Finland and Norway. She singles out Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir, who scored a hat-trick after a poor first half in April’s 3-3 Nations League draw with Switzerland, and rates Sveindis Jonsdottir’s ability to carry the ball and glide past opponents as something Iceland have not had before. Goalkeeping she calls a genuine advantage, with three keepers who could play and Cecilia Runarsdottir the best in Italy this season on loan at Inter. Iceland, she insists, do not simply want to participate. She also describes combining football with a merchandise factory job printing names and numbers onto shirts, plus the post office and gardening, and talks about playing for the girls who come after them.
