City Success: A Tale of Two Trophies

Manchester City won their first FA WSL title on 25 September, beating second-placed Chelsea two-nil before a league record 4,096 at the Academy Stadium. Captain Steph Houghton, at the club since day one, notes that City scored the most and conceded the fewest. Toni Duggan says several of them have always come second best and that it was finally their turn, while Jill Scott recalls losing a title with Everton in the same position and admits to nerves. Seven days later City overcame a resilient Birmingham City to take a second Continental Cup, Lucy Bronze’s looping extra-time header beating Ann-Katrin Berger. Nick Cushing left the final to be with his wife for the birth of their third child.
