City Guide: Nice

She Kicks Special Edition, October 2026 pp.20–22

England’s base for two group games gets the longest of the three city guides. Nice is introduced through its English connections – Queen Victoria’s regular visits, and the English barrister whose 1820 donation paid for the Promenade des Anglais. Local food means seafood, salade nicoise and pan bagnat, with set lunches at ten to fifteen euros keeping costs down and Fennochio’s in Place Rosetti recommended for ice cream. Getting around is mostly on foot in the Vieille Ville, with trams and buses at 1.50 euros a journey, taxis expensive and Velo Bleu bikes free for the first half hour. Sightseeing runs from the pebbly beaches and Colline du Chateau to the Musee Matisse and MAMAC. The Stade de Nice sits ten kilometres west, served by FIFA shuttle buses.
