Interview

Bronze Boldly Goes…

She Kicks, issue 1, December 2009 p.22

An interview with Lucy Bronze in her freshman year at the University of North Carolina, where she has just become the first British player to win the NCAA College Cup, UNC beating Stanford 1-0 on 6 December. The former Sunderland player and England Under-19 explains how a soccer camp at 12 led coach Anson Dorrance to take her under his wing, and why she wears 12: retired shirts left only high numbers until one came free, and it was her number at the Under-17 World Championship. Injuries to Nikki Washington and others turned occasional 20-minute cameos into full games. She praises team-mate Tobin Heath, relishes UNC’s relentless competitiveness, picks the Under-19 Euro title as the best of an extraordinary twelve months, texts her old Sunderland team-mates every week, and admits she is forced to say soccer but despises the word.
