Born Kicking: Maria O’Brien

She Kicks, issue 65, February 2021 p.69

Maria O’Brien is eleven, comes from Worthing, trains with the Chelsea Foundation and plays for Worthing United Under-11 Girls – and describes herself as 50 per cent Arsenal and 50 per cent Fulham, which is the kind of answer the slot exists for. She plays midfield because you get to cover all positions, is right-footed but can use both, and would most like to play in red and white. The player she would meet is Alex Morgan, because she is so inspiring; the ones she would play alongside are Morgan or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang; her heroes are Alex Scott and Alex Morgan. Her only superstition, if it counts, is pancakes for breakfast on a matchday, and her favourite post-match treat is chocolate brownies made by the goalkeeper’s mother.
