Balby Academy of Sport (Doncaster Rovers Belles)

She Kicks, issue 2, April 2010 p.34

A profile of Balby Academy of Sport, the full-time educational player pathway for elite female athletes established in September 2007 in association with Doncaster Rovers Belles. The piece charts three years: a pilot year, growth to 16 students, entry to the ECFA league and a fourth-place finish, with Emma Thompson taking a scholarship at Penn State and Leanne Cantrell picked for England Colleges. In 2009-10 an agreement made the academy part of the Belles’ Super League application and linked it to the Belles Juniors, creating a pathway from age six upwards. The team finished third in the English Colleges league despite playing all season without a goalkeeper, won the Regional Under-18 cup and were crowned ESFA National Champions with a 6-2 win over John Madejski Academy. Kirsty Smith is leaving on one of two full scholarships offered in North America. The page closes with a goalkeeper recruitment appeal.
