All Or Nothing: Scotland Qualify for Euro 2017
She Kicks, issue 38, November 2016 pp.8–10
Scotland qualified for Euro 2017, their first major finals, as one of the six best runners-up, after three successive play-off failures. Head coach Anna Signeul says the squad are still buzzing; captain Gemma Fay describes years of watching tournaments knowing Scotland were better than teams competing in them, and credits Claudia Neto’s hat-trick for Portugal against Finland with removing the pressure before a two-one win in Reykjavik. A seven-nil defeat by the Netherlands followed without Jennifer Beattie, Rachel Corsie and Kim Little, which Signeul calls a valuable lesson better learned now. She praises Sport Scotland and the Scottish Institute of Sport for strength, nutrition, psychology and medical support that lets a largely domestic squad compete.
