San Diego Wave gave former captain Alex Morgan a send-off befitting her status, retiring her number 13 shirt on 7 September. The two-time World Cup-winning USWNT striking great played the final three seasons of her club career at the Wave, lifting the 2023 NWSL Shield as regular-season winners and the 2024 Challenge Cup. The Californian club marked the occasion with a week of pop-up events, including the unveiling of a mural, building to the ceremony itself at their home game against Houston Dash at Snapdragon Stadium – a fitting tribute to one of the sport’s most recognisable names as she moves into retirement.
