2024 UWCL Final: Barcelona 2-0 Lyon
She Kicks, issue 85, July 2024 pp.16–17
Barcelona retained the UEFA Women’s Champions League with a 2-0 win over an eight-time-winning Lyon side in Bilbao, completing a domestic-and-European quadruple in the process. Reigning Ballon d’Or holder Aitana Bonmatí’s surging run forced Vanessa Gilles into an own goal after 63 minutes, before captain Alexia Putellas settled the contest in stoppage time. It was Barça’s first-ever win over Lyon and their third Champions League crown since 2021, watched by a 50,827-strong crowd including Lionesses Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh in the winning line-up. Head coach Jonatan Giráldez, already confirmed as bound for Washington Spirit, signed off with a second European triumph, while Lyon’s Sonia Bompastor endured final-day heartbreak before her own move to take over from Emma Hayes at Chelsea.
