2017/2018 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final: Wolfsburg 1-4 Lyon (aet)
She Kicks, issue 48, July 2018 pp.6–7
Ninety tight minutes in Kiev gave way to five brutal ones. Pernille Harder put Wolfsburg ahead three minutes into extra time; then Alexandra Popp was sent off and Lyon scored through Amandine Henry, Eugenie Le Sommer and Ada Hegerberg inside six minutes, with Camille Abily adding a fifth-minute-from-time fourth in her final game. It is Lyon’s record fifth European title, and it makes Lucy Bronze the first English player to win the competition in its current format – something she says she came to Lyon to do, to pave the way for others. She is unsparing about her own performance and grateful to have world-class players around her. Abily, retiring, says she could not have hoped for a better end.
