Birmingham City Women beat Aston Villa on penalties after a 3-3 draw in Subway Women’s League Cup Group E.

Veatriki Sarri put Birmingham ahead with an assist from Lily Crosthwaite, and Villa were also a player down before the break after Lynn Wilms was shown a red card.

City doubled their lead before the hour mark as Sarri got her second goal of the evening, aided by Rebecca McKenna.

Anna Patten headed home a corner from Missy Bo Kearns to get Villa back into the game at 64 minutes.

They got back on level terms with 13 minutes of the 90 to play, when Georgia Mullett’s blocked shot was followed up by Lucia Kendall to score.

The comeback seemed complete in the 90th minute with a Rachel Maltby goal, only for City to equalise in added time through Batcheba Louis to force a shoot out.

Adrianna Franch made two saves in a 4-2 win on penalties to earn Birmingham the extra point.

But it is Villa who lead the group on goals scored ahead of Spurs, who face Bristol City on Sunday needing a point to finish top.
