Portugal Women overcame a very early setback to beat a youthful USWNT side for the first time ever.

The evening in Pennsylvania had begun well for the hosts and the crowd of 17,297, as Alex Morgan’s retirement was celebrated in honour of her 224 caps and 123 goals for the US, and they took a first-minute lead.

Rose Lavelle had the ball in the corner of Inês Pereira’s net just 33 seconds in, following Catarina Macario’s deflected pass.

The equalizer came just before half-time, with Phallon Tullis-Joyce making a fine save at the expense of a corner, which Kika Nazareth delivered and Diana Gomes headed home, the first time Portugal have scored against the US.

Another corner from Nazareth led to the winning goal in the 72nd minute, as Fátima Pinto’s strike deflected out of Tullis-Joyce’s reach to make it 2-1.

Elsewhere, Mexico had a 1-0 victory over New Zealand thanks to Aaliyah Farmer’s 10th-minute goal.
