Sunderland have signed Wales international defender Rhiannon Roberts on a two-year deal from Spanish side Real Betis.

Roberts has played 79 times for Wales and is currently away at the Women’s Euros, after which she will join up with her Sunderland teammates for pre-season.

She brings to the Barclays WSL2 side experience of winning the second tier with both Liverpool and Doncaster Rovers Belles.

Spending a couple of season in Spain, she made around 50 appearances for top-flight Real Betis.

Head coach Mel Reay told safc.co.uk: “We are thrilled to be able to bring Rhiannon to Sunderland. She is a player who is aligned to our vision and brings an abundance of international and Super League experience. This will add huge value to our team along with her exceptional leadership qualities.”
