England crashed to a 4-1 defeat at the UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship, despite leading Portugal 1-0 inside the last quarter of an hour.

Katie Cox rushed out to deny Carolina Santiago an opening goal for Portugal ten minutes from the break, in the first real threat to either goal.

Erica Cancelinha was booked for a foul on Erika Parkinson and in first-half added time Lexi Potter’s cross was forced in by Vivienne Lia under pressure from Iara Lobo.

Santiago hit the woodwork but eventually equalised in the 76th minute, Anna Marques soon giving Portugal the lead.

Potter conceded a penalty for a challenge on Diana Costa and Marta Gago converted from the spot, Santiago adding her second late on.

All four teams now sit on three points, with Portugal top and the Young Lionesses last before finishing the group games against Spain on Saturday. Kick-off is 6pm UK time, live on BBC Sport Website and iPlayer.

The semi-finals and fifth-place match follow on Tuesday 24 June.
