Some of the game’s biggest names gathered in Paris at the end of February for FIFA’s The Best awards, and the Lionesses took two of the main accolades. Alexia Putellas won The Best FIFA Women’s Player for a second successive year, ahead of Alex Morgan and Beth Mead, for a 2021-22 season in which she captained Barcelona to a domestic treble and reached another Champions League final. She had not walked onto a pitch since May 2022 because of an ACL injury, and told FIFA she had feared people would forget her. Sarina Wiegman collected The Best FIFA Women’s Coach for a third time, with England still unbeaten since she joined. Mary Earps was named best goalkeeper, ahead of Christiane Endler and Ann-Katrin Berger, and spoke about the resilience the position demands.
