Group C: Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland And Portugal
She Kicks, issue 75, September 2022 p.17
A group that ended as expected, with Sweden and the Netherlands through, but whose table hides how close Switzerland came. The Swiss led 2-0 after five minutes of their opening match only for Portugal to rescue a draw, and against the Netherlands they were level at 1-1 when Coumba Sow’s golden opportunity passed them by before three late Dutch goals made it 4-1. Portugal twice pegged the Dutch back before losing 3-2, then went down 5-0 to Sweden. Among the pre-tournament favourites, Sweden progressed without yet hitting their stride, a feeling shared by the defending champions: Vivianne Miedema missed two games with Covid and captain and goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal’s tournament ended through injury in the opening match, prompting Daphne van Domselaar to emerge.
