Magnificent (Ella Toone interview, with Ella… On The Spot)

She Kicks, issue 67, June 2021 pp.16–19

Ella Toone topped Manchester United’s scoring and assists charts in her first proper WSL season, and describes a lockdown spent working on everything that had kept her out of the side. She was walking the dog when Phil Neville rang with a first England call-up, and rang her father, her mother and Abbie McManus straight afterwards. On her debut against Northern Ireland she took a penalty and scored, having felt confident the moment the ball was in her hands. She is frank about not being offered a professional contract by Manchester City at eighteen, about staying off her phone for days after games, and about three years of work with a psychologist. A quickfire panel gets Noel Gallagher, Oasis, Ibiza and, eventually, Roy Keane.
