Interview
Where There’s A Ward, There’s A Way (Carla Ward interview)
She Kicks, issue 66, April 2021 pp.54–57
Carla Ward took the Birmingham City job two weeks before the season started, with no money and a squad that had to be assembled by ringing round other managers for loans. What she built instead was a mindset: if the players can look left and right and know everyone will run through a brick wall for them, she says, that is half the battle, and teams that once saw Blues as an easy three points no longer fancy it. She talks about the derby win at Villa Park with two substitutes on the bench, about Rachel Corsie stretching her without knowing it, about learning her trade at Sheffield United under Kevin McCabe, and about wanting to be somewhere long enough to build something and leave a legacy.
