Safe Hands: Chloe Morgan (Crystal Palace)

She Kicks, issue 63, October 2020 pp.44–45

Crystal Palace’s goalkeeper takes the magazine’s regular goalkeepers’ questionnaire, and brings an unusual route to it: she was a right-back until she was twenty-two, when her team’s keeper dislocated a knee mid-match and somebody had to go in. She never looked back. Her favourite save came in the Championship title decider against Aston Villa, a quickly taken free-kick heading for the top corner that she reached without being properly set, and the draw secured promotion. She names Emma Byrne, Carly Telford, Rachel Brown-Finnis and Hope Solo as the keepers who put women’s goalkeeping on the map. Distribution is the part of her game she has worked hardest on. Asked what would make her better, she says being a foot taller, and adds that a save involves about ten decisions in a split second.
