She Kicks a Beat: Sounds Of The Skill School (Gemma Davison)
She Kicks, issue 59, March 2020 pp.56–59
Gemma Davison’s music interview doubles as a tour of a long career. The Tottenham winger, whose skills have taken defenders off their feet as well as out of their stride, works through the soundtracks attached to spells at Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Notts County and Western New York Flash, and to an England career alongside Eniola Aluko and Lucy Staniforth. She remembers being made to sing on the team bus with England for an initiation, and names Rosella Ayane among the current Spurs dressing room’s louder presences. The Spice Girls surface, as they tend to in this slot. Running through it is her account of what music does before a game, and of the Karen Hills and Juan Amoros set-up she was playing under in Tottenham’s first WSL season.
