World Cup Gallery: England 1-2 Japan (Semi-final)
She Kicks, issue 29, August 2015 p.27
England lose 2-1 to Japan in the semi-final, Fara Williams cancelling out Aya Miyama’s penalty before Laura Bassett’s own goal deep into stoppage time. Karen Carney, describing her best friend as inconsolable, says the team did not deserve that and were the better side, adding that they are just normal people who put on a jersey for their country and give everything. Mark Sampson calls it tough to take but says he is proud of the players, staff and supporters, that the group could not have given any more, and that the way they went out will make them even more heroes and leave a lasting legacy. He singles out Bassett as epitomising the pride, passion and never-say-die attitude fans want to see. Readers voted Bassett player of the match.
