Official Kicks: Charlotte Sparling
She Kicks, issue 26, February 2015 p.51
Sixteen-year-old Charlotte Sparling, known as Lottie, took up refereeing after Lone Millin, lead coach at the Asfordby Amateurs all-inclusive team where she coaches, suggested it in the winter of 2013. She became a mini soccer referee, took charge of her first game in February 2014 and completed her basic referee course that August, and now officiates Under-10, Under-11 and Under-12 fixtures. Playing for Melton Mowbray Ladies and Loughborough College Academy helps her read the game and judge whether a player was fouled. The best part so far, she says, has been being fair but firm so players understand the laws and enjoy the game. She has had to challenge a coach and a spectator over abusive language, but has enjoyed every match.
