Rachel Daly interview

She Kicks, issue SK19, February 2014 p.20

An interview with Rachel Daly after a storming 2013 at St John’s University in New York. The former Leeds and Lincoln defender was red-shirted for her first year under NCAA eligibility rules, having been out of education for two years, then topped the NCAA Division I scoring charts and became the first player since Kelly Smith to win Best Offensive Player and Best Newcomer in the BIG EAST Conference in the same season. Daly describes the shock of a call-up to Mark Sampson’s La Manga camp after a long absence from the England set-up, positive coach feedback and a subsequent call-up to the Under-23 tournament. Played up front by coach Ian Stone because that was where she was needed, she admits she no longer knows her position. She praises the daily training and facilities of a full scholarship, is studying Sports Management, and resists returning early. A factfile notes all 23 of her goals came from inside the box.
