Olympics Group G Preview: USA, France, Colombia, North Korea

She Kicks, issue 9, July 2012 pp.24–25

A Group G preview covering what the magazine calls the toughest section. The United States are tipped for a fourth Olympic title, motivated by the World Cup final defeat by Japan and given extra preparation time by the suspension of the WPS; Pia Sundhage has kept a core group despite losing Ali Krieger to an ACL injury, with Shannon Boxx anchoring midfield, Lauren Cheney central and Abby Wambach paired with Alex Morgan. France are rated among the favourites, eleven of the squad European champions with Lyon, led by 38-year-old captain Sandrine Soubeyrand under the charismatic Bruno Bini. North Korea’s new coach Sin Ui Gun has brought a more attacking approach, while Ricardo Rozo’s Colombia are praised as gutsy competitors in too hard a group.
