Still Roaring at 40

She Kicks, issue 3, October 2010 p.17

A club history marking Millwall Lionesses’ 40th season, begun with a league opener against Leeds United. Formed in 1971, the Lionesses spent twenty years in the Greater London League, winning it seven times and taking the League Cup twice, and led the way by becoming the first women’s team affiliated to a professional men’s club and by pioneering a Football in the Community scheme. In 1991 they beat holders Doncaster Belles 1-0 in the FA Cup final, won the Greater London Premier Division and joined the new WFA National League; they beat Wembley 1-0 for a second FA Cup in 1997, the same year as a Premier League Cup win over Everton. Relegated in 1999, they returned to the National Division as Southern champions in 2008-09. The page lists honours and the England players the club produced, among them Hope Powell, who credits Millwall with starting her career.
