Unsung Unitt (Rachel Unitt)

She Kicks Special Edition, October 2016 p.60

An interview marking 31 March 2012, when the Walsall-born former Fulham professional and Everton defender joined the hundred-cap club against Croatia, an occasion made prouder by also being made captain. Unitt says she wanted to score to join Rachel Yankey, Kelly Smith and Fara Williams in scoring on their hundredth, and duly got a diving header she describes as going down in stages, in a 6-0 win. She names playing before almost 30,000 at Manchester City’s ground during Euro 2005 and a two-goal game at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium near her home among her favourite memories, and the 2007 World Cup in China as her lowest point, the only outfield player not to get a minute. She was inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame in October 2016.
