Fran on Fees

Her Goal, issue 1, November 2025 p.24

Ayisha Gulati interviews Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Fran Kirby about the women’s transfer market, ten years after Chelsea signed her from Reading for a fee the BBC reported at 40,000 to 60,000 pounds and Reading claimed as a British record. The Q&A is framed by Arsenal’s reported one-million-pound signing of Olivia Smith from Liverpool in July 2025, a world record for a women’s transfer, and Orlando Pride’s reported 1.1m deal for Lizbeth Ovalle from Tigres UANL, plus the confusion over Grace Geyoro’s deadline-day move to London City Lionesses that chief executive Martin Semmens refuted. Kirby calls the million-pound barrier huge for the game, says she never expected to see it, backs Smith to relish the pressure at Arsenal, and jokes that her own valuation would have been 1.2m.
