Northern Ireland claimed their first victory at the UEFA Women’s Under-17 Euros by defeating none other than Germany, while England fell short of the result they needed against Norway but still secured a play-off spot for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Clara Choisy hit the post for group-winners Germany, while Northern Ireland keeper Ifeoma Agoha clawed out a close-range effort from Mia Khun and a powerful strike from Johanna Putzer.

The only goal came in the 77th minute after a Chloe Beckinsale free-kick, when Abbie Smyth forced a parry from Germany keeper Annika Dubel, and Charlotte Havern was there to slot home the rebound.

Agoha then pushed a shot from Lena Joy Martens onto the base of the post to protect the lead.

Northern Ireland WU17 boss Gail Redmond told irishfa.com: “I was absolutely delighted with the performance. To beat Germany in a major tournament is a fantastic achievement. This group (of players) is very special.

“But this has been a collective effort. The clubs and leagues, especially the South Belfast Youth League, have been so supportive on the journey to the finals.

“The pathway coaches and my staff deserve an incredible amount of credit. I am proud to be the leader of this team.”

England needed a win over Norway to reach the semi-finals but trailed 1-0 at half-time after Sofia Norebo’s powerful half-volley beat goalkeeper Evie Mitchell.

Chelsea N’Drin brought the Young Lionesses level in the 63rd minute, connecting with a Mia Dixon corner to head past Erla Braathen.

Phoebe De Bohan tried an audacious strike, but Braathen managed to turn it behind for a corner.

England will now face the third-placed team in Group B at Inver Park in Larne (KO 4pm) for a spot at the World Cup in Morocco this October, with the final group games kicking off at 3pm today, all live on UEFA.tv.
