Southampton FC Women struck three times late on for a 5-2 victory over Sheffield United in the Barclays WSL 2, watched by 1,286 at Eastleigh FC.

Sheffield United’s Eva Butler forced a good save from Fran Stenson, but Amy Andrews found the net from outside the box, firing into the bottom corner after 12 minutes.

The Saints lost Amy Goddard to a head injury but had begun getting on top in the match.

Tegan McGowan and Aimee Palmer both saw their shots tipped away by goalkeeper Sia Rogers, who twice got lucky after passing the ball straight to Michaela McAlonie.

The hosts grabbed their equaliser in the 40th minute when Jess Simpson poked the ball home after the Blades failed to clear a corner.

They had turned the game around by the 45th minute, when McAlonie took her chance from the edge of the box.

After the hour mark, Sheffield equalised when handball was given against Tara Bourne in the area, and Andrews doubled her tally from the spot.

With five minutes of the 90 to go, Mary Bashford bundled the ball over the line for Southampton, and it all fell apart for the visitors as Jess Reavill was sent off and Palmer buried the resulting free kick.

Bashford got her second in added time, as the Saints kept up their slim hopes of getting into the promotion play-off place, while Sheffield United stay four points off the bottom with two relegation ‘six-pointers’ to follow.
