Arsenal Women ended a long wait for a win at Chelsea with a 2-0 victory watched by over 30,000 at Stamford Bridge.

Katie McCabe’s strike was only parried down by Hannah Hampton to Alessia Russo, but her shot was cleared by Lucy Bronze.

Erin Cuthbert’s effort was deflected just wide, while Naomi Girma’s back-post header was nodded off the line by Lotte Wubben-Moy.

Beth Mead broke the deadlock for the Gunners after 55 minutes, thumping the ball into the far corner after a big set-up by Russo.

Alyssa Thompson came close to an equaliser right away, but five minutes later, Mead found the unmarked Mariona Caldentey, who doubled the lead.

Hampton had to tip over an effort from Emily Fox, Cuthbert headed wide from five yards out at the other end, Sjoeke Nusken did likewise with time running out for the hosts.

The result moved Arsenal within a point of Chelsea but offers Manchester City the opportunity to go nine points clear at the top on Sunday.
