Southampton FC Women defeated Portsmouth 4-0 in Barclays WSL 2, watched by a crowd of 7,561 at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints struck twice in a 10-minute spell from midway through the first half, with Jess Simpson smashing the first into the roof of the net from Abbie Ferguson’s inch-perfect cross.

Tara Bourne’s corner set up the second, as Ellie Brazil met the ball at the front post with a glancing header that slipped just inside the far upright.

The points were secured with a quickfire double in the final dozen minutes, as Mary Bashford finished after Tegan McGowan’s shot was parried by Jess Gray, before Aimee Palmer turned her marker from a Megan Collett pass to bury it in the bottom corner.

The result lifts Southampton up two places to fifth and leaves Pompey five points and one spot off the bottom of the WSL 2 table.
